It's been an honour for me to again collaborate with Kate Kowalski. Over the last year we have been putting together a paper as a tribute to Eve Lipchik and her life achievements. We are proud to say that our paper has now been accepted by the Journal of Systemic Therapies and will be published soon.
Eve was one of the original team in Milwaukee who developed a new approach to therapy that would become known as Solution Focused Brief Therapy. For many people including myself, Eve was THE key person, but her achievements are sometimes under-recognised. Eve humanised the approach, by maintaining the focus on the person who has come to seek help, and to focus on the therapeutic relationship rather than the techniques that are used by the therapist.
This paper explores Eve’s contributions to the early and ongoing development of SFBT and examines how her work enriched and expanded its practical applications. We address her role as one of the founders of SFBT, as well as her emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, the important role of emotion in the therapy process, the interview as intervention, and the application of SFBT in various settings. I will update this page with a link to the page once it has been published
Online interview
The paper includes the reflections and perspectives of a number of the early Milwaukee team, as well as practitioners and teachers of SFBT around the world whose work has been influenced by Eve Lipchik. After finishing the paper, we invited some of the early Milwaukee team to join us in an online discussion about the beginnings of SFBT and the people who created it. I am honoured to have the following people join me:
Kate Kowalski
Alex Molnar
Ron Kral
Michele Weiner-Davis
Karol Wendt
The discussion will take place on April 1 (USA and Europe) and April 2 (Australasia). For me in Adelaide it will be April 2 at 6.30 am, so check your local times in relation to this. We will be hosted by the wonderful people at Family Based Solutions in the U.K. who host a regular interview/podcast called FBS Chat to explore Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Here is a link to the live discussion - please join us if you can, but if you can't a recording will be available on the FBS Chat youtube channel.
